Westport, CT Public Schools

Few things are more important than your children's education. Well, here’s the good news: Westport schools are some of the best anywhere. In fact, the excellent school system is a big reason why Westport's real estate values are among the highest in the country despite difficult market conditions.

Westport's high school and middle schools have been rated 10 out of 10 by GreatSchools.org, and the town's elementary schools have earned 9 and above. The more than 25 public and private schools in Westport ranging from pre-K to 12 all add up to one answer: The area is great and so are the schools.

Staples High School: A Class Act

Let’s take a closer look at one of Westport’s schools, Staples High School. The school’s focus is on "critical thinking" — teaching students to arrive at a conclusion based on observations, experience, verbal and written expressions, and debate. This type of learning doesn’t just end when the school bell rings; it prepares students for college, careers and life itself. And insisting that critical thinking is taught at all times seems to have paid off:

  • Business Week chose Staples as the top performing school in Connecticut.
  • GreatSchools.net rates it 10 out of 10, with a parent rating of 5 out of 5.
  • US News & World Report ranked Staples among America’s best high schools in 2009.
  • In 2004 the Wall Street Journal listed Staples among the country’s best public and private schools.
  • Staples' school newspaper, Inklings, has won the Columbia Scholastic Press Association gold medal every year since 2000. It has also received first place with special honors from the American Scholastic Press Association every year since 2001, and the The Hartford Courant called it the best school paper in the state.
  • Staples' drama department, Staples Players, has received many awards for its main stage productions, including numerous Moss Hart awards.

Staples Facilities & Curriculum

Staples focuses on accelerated learning, honors and college prep to get students “engaged in a quest for academic excellence”, as its mission states. And it shows: 80-100% of graduates go on to 2- and 4-year colleges.

As for the facilities and curriculum, there are three students per computer, every classroom has Internet connection and WiFi access is available throughout the school. The library is a state-of-the-art Media Center, known as the hub of the school.

In addition to French, German, Italian and Spanish, Latin and Mandarin are also taught. The school's athletic program offers basketball, cheerleading, cross country, field hockey, fencing, golf, gymnastics, lacrosse, soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, track, volleyball, water polo and wrestling.

There’s also a rich assortment of clubs and extracurricular activities such as Key Club, Interact Club, Builders Beyond Borders and more that are free and open to all. Plus, there’s no shortage of arts programs from orchestra, band, theater/drama, chorus, photography, drawing/painting, ceramics, video/film production, radio station and culinary.
